hands

hi there, i'm a complete novice having only bought a guitar a couple of weeks but have been strumming away since then and now wish i'd picked one up years ago. problem is im trying to learn one of my favourite songs, high and dry by radiohead but playing the intro seems impossible to me as i cant use my thumb to mute out the bottom e string and reach the a string with my 1st finger, in fact for quite a lot of notes i seem to have a similar problem. is it something any of you guys or girls out there have struggled with and is it a case of some peoples hands are just too small to manage this, any help would be appreciated

I just checked and I can't do it either, so I must have short fingers like you. The only thing I can do is squeeze very tight and I can just touch the 6th string with my skin when it's vibrating. However, I have never needed to do this, so it doesn't worry me. Normally, I only need to mute it when I am playing an A6 power chord. With my index finger on the D string, I can just reach with my thumb. We are just unlucky. It's definitely a disadvantage to have small hands, but I manage to play most things that I want to and I've developed a style around what I can do.

it is impossible for me to do this as my fingers are short and stumpy. this pissed me off and everytime I play I think about it
