Your favourite Bass Player of all time?

Mark Badham posted this 07 October 2015

My favourite Bass player of all time is Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath... just the jazz style playing technique and his incredible playing along side Bill Ward for me this is what made Sabbath different way ahead of their time back in the 70's... and that's what got them noticed. I hope more Bass players share their views in the forum!!

Being a bassist myself I would have to say I have quite a number of bassists that I like and have inspired me over the years, including Mark King, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Les Claypool, Flea, Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones, Jean-Jaques Burnell, James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, Sting, Vic Wooten....blimey I could be all day naming bassists here thinking about it! For me it's not about their actual playing, but also the way they compose their basslines to work for the song or can sit on a simple but hypnotic groove rather than try to overplay.

I think one bassist who regularly falls under the radar in these 'who's your favourite' type questions is, in my humble opinion, Colin Moulding from XTC. Not the most technically gifted but in terms of how he wrote lines that worked so well with Andy Partridge's guitar parts would deffo give Lennon & McCartney a run for their money.

Like I say there's loads more bassists I could mention but these are some that immediately spring to mind!

Yes... Colin Moulding XTC and Andy Partridge great combo... I remember tracks by them like Making Plans for Nigel and Senses Working Overtime... and yes certainly give Lennon & McCartney a run for their money. Crikey!! forgot all about the great bass playing of Mark King and Level 42... I think he's still playing?... You sum up Bass playing it really is the simple but hypnotic groove rather than overplaying.
