Being a bassist myself I would have to say I have quite a number of bassists that I like and have inspired me over the years, including Mark King, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Les Claypool, Flea, Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones, Jean-Jaques Burnell, James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, Sting, Vic Wooten....blimey I could be all day naming bassists here thinking about it! For me it's not about their actual playing, but also the way they compose their basslines to work for the song or can sit on a simple but hypnotic groove rather than try to overplay.
I think one bassist who regularly falls under the radar in these 'who's your favourite' type questions is, in my humble opinion, Colin Moulding from XTC. Not the most technically gifted but in terms of how he wrote lines that worked so well with Andy Partridge's guitar parts would deffo give Lennon & McCartney a run for their money.
Like I say there's loads more bassists I could mention but these are some that immediately spring to mind!
